This stock medical exhibit shows an L4-5 disc herniation with discectomy. The first illustration shows the preoperative condition of the lumbar spine. In it, the L4-5 herniated disc is seen impinging on the cauda equina of the spinal cord. Other normal structures labeled and illustrated include the dura mater, the fourth lumbar vertebra and the fifth lumbar vertebra. The second illustration shows a superior view of the herniated disc. In this illustration, the impinged spinal nerve and the herniated disc are depicted. The third illustration shows a posterior view of the lower back of a caucasian female. In it, the location of a vertical linear incision over the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae is indicated. The fourth illustration shows the first step of the procedure. In it, the procedure is initiated on the right side. A small amount of the inferior portion of L4 is drilled off. The fifth illustration shows the second step of the procedure. In it, the nerve root is retracted medially while the herniated disc is removed from the right side. The sixth illustration shows the incision site on the lumbar vertebra for the procedure to be repeated on the left side.
